Several Buffs Earn Regional Marks

BOULDER – The University of Colorado recorded 15 first-place finishes at the Colorado Invitational on Saturday.

 

The Buffs had 11 individual winners and swept all four relays during their second home meet of the season. Five individuals earned regional marks as did one relay team.  

 

Distance runners Kenyon Neuman and Brent Vaughn recorded regional marks in the 1,500-meter run. Neuman won the race in a personal best of 3 minutes and 49.93 seconds. Vaughn recorded a mark of 3:51.44. Both have the opportunity to advance to the regional championship on May 30-31 in Lincoln, Neb.

 

Bradley Harkrader also recorded a top-three finish in the 1,500. He ran a time of 3:56.06.

 

Jenny Barringer earned her second regional mark of the season as she placed first in the 800-meter run. She completed the two lap race in 2:09.37. The Buffs took the next three spots in the race. Sara Vaughn was second (2:15.89); Allison Eckert took third (2:17.58) and Emily Hanenburg was fourth (2:19.41).

 

Colorado’s 4x100-meter relay teams swept the competition with both recording first-place finishes. The men’s team, Hugh Charles, Ryan Campbell, Jared Steward and Jeremy Dodson, took the field in 40.34 and notched a regional mark. The women’s team, which was made up of Veronica Maul, Dyamond Seay, Toi Windham and Cassie Hirshfield, won in a time of 47.49.

 

The men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relays also took top honors. The women’s team won their race with a time of 3:54.64 and the men won in 3:19.83.

 

Brandin Williams won his third javelin title in as many weeks as he recorded a toss of 196 feet and 7 inches and led the Buffs to a 1-2-3 finish in the event. Kevin Fasing and Chase Dukes placed second and third, respectively. Fasing recorded a throw of 187-07 and Dukes tossed the javelin 181-05.

 

James Begley had a great day in the field and led the Buffs in several events. He took first in the shot put and the discus. Begley earned a regional mark of 178-05 in the discus. He notched a mark of 54-06.50 in the shot put. Both were personal bests. Begley also took third in the hammer throw with a toss of 185-11.

 

Allison Sawyer won her second 3,000-meter steeplechase race of the season. She recorded a personal best of 11:11.03 and improved her time by over 30 seconds. Matt Herzl took second in the men’s race (10:14.32).

 

In the sprints, Hirshfield led the Buffs in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. She broke the tape in 12.40 for her second fastest time of the year in the 100 and crossed the finish in 25.36 in the 200. Maul took second in the 200 (25.38) and Chelsea Haverty finished third (25.55).

 

Ryan Campbell took top honors in his first race of the outdoor season. Campbell finished the 200-meter dash in 21.39; which was also a regional mark. Hugh Charles made his 100-meter dash debut for Colorado. He earned a mark of 10.79.

 

CU put two in the top three of the 400-meter dash. Nate Terry won the race in 48.29. Adrian Gomez was third and ran a mark of 49.08.  Ben Ryan also recorded a third-place finish in the 800-meter run. He finished in 1:56.31.

 

Troi Smith won the 100-meter hurdles in a personal record 15.41 and Chelsea Haverty placed third in the event with a time of 15.68.

 

The Colorado women also dominated in the 400-meter hurdles. Joi Windham placed second (62.53) and Toi Windham was third (62.79). Sara Price took fourth with a mark of 64.22.

 

The Buffs will be back in action next weekend and will compete at three different meets. The Mt. Sac Relays will be April 18-19, the Colorado State Open is April 19 and the Michael Johnson Invite is also April 19.
