By: Dennis and Kathi Brown Posted at: 04/13/2008 07:38 AM
Chadron State College athletes won a pair of firsts and had seven second place finishes on Saturday during the University of Colorado Invitational Track and Field Meet.

The Eagles’ event winners were Joe Schultz of Alliance, who ran the 3000 meters in 8:41.80 to knock nearly a second off his school record, and Brandon Harrington of Grand Island, who won the triple jump by going 46-7 ½.

Among the Eagles placing second were Stacy Girard of Alliance, who took three seconds off her school record in the women’s 3000 meters. Her time Saturday was 10:25.85. Girard also had a seasonal best of 4:46.44 while placing third in the 1500.

Also earning seconds for the CSC women were Laurie Eklund of Cheyenne, who ran the 400 meters in 59.90 seconds, Jessica Horsley of Sheridan, Wyo., who threw the hammer 159-2; and Mary Wells of Albion, who shoved the shot 44-1 ½. The marks by Eklund and Horsley are their seasonal bests.

Besides winning the triple jump, Harrington was second in the high hurdles in 15.01 seconds. Also placing second for the CSC men were Mike Smith of Litchfield Park, Ariz., who ran the 100 meters in 10.73, and John Ritzen of Chadron, who went 43-1 ½ in the triple jump.

Gary Metcalf of Phoenix placed third in both the 200 meters in 21.98 and the long jump at 21-11 ¾. Kayla Carrier of Scottsbluff took third in the women’s high jump by matching her career best of 5-3.

Athletes from seven Colorado schools as well as numerous unattached athletes participated in the meet. Most of the events had from 15 to 20 contestants while some had more than 30. The Eagles entered the meet after the weather interferred with the meets they had originally entered at Dickinson State in North Dakota and Emporia State in Kansas.

The Eagles are slated to enter the Ram Open Meet at Colorado State in Fort Collins next Saturday.
